paint painting of Steve by Pierre Bonnet

painting of Steve by Pierre Bonnet

Here's a really nice piece of art, enamel over copper that was done in 1955 by artist Pierre Bonnet from Limoges France.  The painting measures approximately 5 1/2 inches tall by 3 inches wide with the frame size of 11 1/4" high by 8 3/4" wide. Most of his pieces were done in multiple amounts of the same subject. This one is a one off and painted especially for Steve Reeves. Taken from the famous photo of Tony Lanza the day after Steve won the Mr. America. Signed by artist in lower right hand corner.

It's hard to scan this piece because of the reflection of the copper under the enamel. I can tell you that the copper is convex more out in the center and with the enamel makes Steve look like three dimensional with the clouds behind him. Even the clouds seem a little too bright in the scan. It in very good shape but could use a professional cleaning. I have not touched it because I wouldn't know how to clean it.

Pierre Bonnet worked at Limoges capital of the “Arts du Feu” for over twenty years. A former student of the Ecole des Beaux Arts, he was the recipient of many awards including the Meilleur Ouvrier de France. In 1955 he became President of the National Jury in Limoges and was awarded l’Ordre du Merite de l’Artisant Francais. He was considered a Master Enameller of his day.

Each colour in these Limoges enamels has to be applied separately then fired then on to the next colour. Enamels can take between 16 and 22 firings, a long and laborious process that has to be right first time each time. No wonder they are so sought after.
